Introduction

The Cancer Hospital at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital consists of 11 disease-specific multidisciplinary collaborative centers: the Gastric Cancer Center, Colorectal Cancer Center, Lung Cancer Center, Liver, Biliary & Pancreatic Cancer Center, Breast Cancer Center, Gynecologic Cancer Center, Thyroid Cancer Center, Urologic Cancer Center, Head and Neck Cancer Center, Neuro-Oncology Center, and Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcoma and Metastatic Cancer Center.

The hospital has established a new paradigm in cancer treatment through a multidisciplinary team approach, where various clinical departments cooperate organically to find the optimal treatment for each patient. This professional support team includes specialists from each clinical department, specialized nurses, home care nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers. The hospital implements a disease-specific ward system for solid tumors and provides professional care for cancer patients through specialized nurses.

As a result, the hospital has demonstrated differentiated capabilities in high-difficulty cancer treatment, achieving milestones such as the first 1,000 cases of single-port urological robotic surgery in the Asia-Pacific region, world-class gastric cancer surgery outcomes, successful surgery on a 102-year-old colorectal cancer patient (the oldest in Korea), and reaching 1,000 cases of single-port robotic thyroid surgery for only the second time in Korea.

Seoul St. Mary's Hospital plans to operate the largest proton therapy center in Korea by introducing the most advanced proton equipment currently available in Asia. It is evaluated as a next-generation device that is significantly more advanced than first-generation proton therapy machines in Korea. One of its key advantages is adaptive proton therapy, a technology that allows for immediate treatment of tumors that have changed shape during the treatment period without additional waiting time.

The Proton Therapy Center, to be located within the Seoul St. Mary's Hospital complex in Banpo-dong, will be constructed in two stages. In the first stage, more than 250 billion KRW will be invested with the goal of completing the introduction and installation of the proton therapy machine and commencing operations by the end of 2029. The facility will consist of 8 floors (7 underground and 1 above ground) with a total floor area of 37,850 $m^2$.
